Rooster (雞公), 2024

As the old Chinese saying goes, "Every design has meaning, and every meaning brings good fortune." Every pattern in the Chinese symbol carries a blessing. A rug reinterpretation of the classic Rooster Bowl (雞公碗) design, which dates back to the 15th century - The Ming dynasty. Symbolising Prosperity, Home, and Family Connection in Chinese Culture. The rug transforms a traditional, cultural blessing into a modern piece that fosters connection, conversation and collective memory. The rug’s soft texture invites gatherings and provides comfort, much like a dining table but less formal. Tactile quality encourages people to linger, sit, play, eat and engage in physical interactions. Vibrant colour palettes and symbols celebrate Chinese cultural heritage and emphasise the importance of preserving and reinterpreting traditional designs in contemporary contexts, weaving a narrative of unity and togetherness echoing the exhibition’s theme. Facilitating conversations and building stronger communities, it reflects the enduring power of cultural symbols in bringing Hong Kong people together, fostering unity and shared memory.
